Clara Belle Kidston, 81 of Pioneer died Saturday Morning at the Evergreen Manor Nursing Home in Montpelier. She was born on February 7th 1930 in Plymouth, MI to Leo Earl & Hazel Belle (Carley) Van Bonn.
Clara graduated in 1948 from South Lyon High School in South Lyon, Michigan, and then attended Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. On June 23rd 1951 she married Mayor R. Bruce Kidston in Salem, Michigan and soon after moved from South Lyon, Michigan to Williams County. In 1959 Clara and Bruce purchased the Montpelier Drive-In Theater. Clara and Bruce were also Co-owner and Founders of Artesian of Pioneer, INC., Kidston Family Companies, Ramada Inn, Stateline Investors, Kexon INC., and Peak Damand Consultants.
Clara loved to snowmobile and even went hunting and fishing a time or two with her husband until they got lost in the woods and that was enough for her!!...Gardening and bowling were a passion with her…Clara had a blast playing cards with her bridge club and cards in general with family and friends – and she showed no mercy…Race horses were also a guilty pleasure…. Clara supported the North Central Schools Athletic and music programs and was a constant fixture there thru the years... She loved traveling with her husband to many destinations such as, Hawaii, England, Scotland, Japan and Mexico. Clara was Bruce's Co-pilot on many adventures, Alaska included.
Clara's greatest joy in life was spending time with her children and grandchildren, from the ball field, to the back yard to just sitting around the kitchen table, she always had a smile, love and advice to give.
Surviving are four sons: Robert B. & Linda Kidston of Pioneer, William & Susan Kidston of Bryan, Edward and Ann Kidston of Pioneer and John P. Kidston of Defiance, Ohio; eleven grandchildren Alex, Zack, Michael, Will, Craig, Nolan, Lucas, Anthony Kidston, Katrina Burt, Jodi Fiser and Lizzy Kidston; five step grandchildren, six great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren; three sisters Elizabeth "Betty" Gardner in Michigan, Mary Lou & Charles Smith in Colorado and Laura Jean "Jeanie" & Gary Mitchell in Kentucky; two brothers Harold & Shirley Van Bonn in Michigan and John & Connie Van Bonn in Michigan; one brother in-law Charles Raymor in Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her husband in December of 1997, two daughters Sharon D. Kidston in 1988 and Linda J. Kidston in 1952, Brother George Van Bonn, Sister Sally Raymor and brother in-law Jerry Gardner.
Visitation hours for Clara will be on Friday and Saturday from 4-8pm at the Thompson Funeral Home in Pioneer. Services will be on Sunday at 12 noon at St. John's Lutheran Church in Montpelier with Pastor Paul Gruetter to officiate. Interment will be at Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer.
