Obituary

Eula Faye Vonalt died on March 7, 2013. She was born near Hicksville, Ohio, on June 2, 1916, to Blanchie Mae Miars, and Lawrence Glen Gorrell. Various relatives raised Eula Faye and influenced her commitment to education. She graduated from Hicksville High School in 1934 and then worked in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, for two years. On April 19, 1936, she married Paul Christian Vonalt of Montpelier, Ohio. For many years, she and her husband Paul lived at 702 E. Lawrence St. in Montpelier, Ohio, and reared five children. After her husband's death, she retired to Glenview Apts. in Montpelier and eventually moved to Hillside Country Living. Eula Faye was a member of the Montpelier Church of Christ most of her life. For fifteen years, she helped to teach a teen-age class. She was also active in the Ladies Missionary Group as their secretary. She often gave Inspirational Book Reviews and Readings for Ladies' Study Clubs and Church groups. She was active in the Williams County WCTU, serving as their Literary Chairman. For ten years, Eula Faye was Leader of a Brownie and Girl Scout troop. At one time she was a Leader of two troops. While working with the Girl Scout troop, she helped her daughter reach the highest award. During this time her husband was a Boy Scout Leader, and Eula Faye was also active in Cub and Boy Scouting. In 1953 she was P.T.A. President for Montpelier Elementary school. With the cooperation of townspeople and the school, she oversaw the establishment of the recreation club "Hob'n Nob" where teenagers could go for alcohol-free fellowship. In 1954, as her older children approached college age, she began working as an Operating Room Technician at the Williams County Hospital in Montpelier, a position she held for eleven years. To advance her nursing skills, she attended nursing classes and passed her State Board Exam in 1969 to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a Charge Nurse at Hillside Nursing Home for fourteen years and at Evergreen Manor for four years. She and her husband Paul were very active in the Black Swamp Audubon Society; Eula Faye served as secretary for several years. In later years, she enjoyed writing encouragement cards and birthday cards, especially to shut-ins and her church members. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, infant son Lanny Duane, oldest son Larry Paul, brothers Rex, Duane, and Jack Gorrell; her sister Caroline McDonald, her parents, and her stepmother Ella Gorrell Blandford. She is survived by four children, Merrice Anne (James) Chandler of Englewood, Florida; Freddie Lynn (Ellen) Vonalt of Mancelona, Michigan; Timothy Chris (Gail) Vonalt of Riverside, California; Kerry Gene Vonalt of Edgerton, Ohio, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Vonalt, nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren; two sisters (Jean Gaige and Shirley Dorsey), one brother (Robert Gorrell), and many nieces and nephews.
