Leland M. Haines, 87, of Montpelier died Wednesday October 13, 2010 at Evergreen Manor Nursing Home, Montpelier following a lingering illness.
Born September 29, 1923 at Montpelier to Esther Mae Bordner and Marion E. Haines, he was a lifelong area resident. A 1941 graduate of Montpelier High School, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War Two, having served in the Philippine Islands.
On June 30, 1946 he was married to Catherine I. "Kate" Moore and she preceded him in death on February 5, 1993.
A lifelong farmer, he had formerly been employed at White Motor Company in Montpelier, and later as a machine operator with ARO Corporation, Bryan, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Montpelier.
Leland is survived by four daughters, Sharon (Bill) Brewer, Bryan; Karen (Bernie) Tressler, Montpelier; Janet (Michael) Gearhart, Van Wert; and Pam Haines, Baggs, WY. Five grandchildren, Tawny (Scott) Schwartz, Delaware, Ohio; Todd (Linda) Brewer, Cary, North Carolina; Brandi (James) Sabatino, Montpelier; Andrew (Niki) Gearhart and Mitchum (Brooke) Gearhart both of Van Wert, Ohio. Great grandchildren, Madison Schwartz, Kathryn and Hannah Sabatino, Alexa and Sophia Gearhart, Nathan and Lauren Gearhart.
Visitation for Leland will be Friday from 5 - 9 p.m. in Wilson - Geesey Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. John's Lutheran Church, Montpelier with Pastor John H. Crilley officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by Montpelier Veteran Organizations. Preferred memorials are to St. John's Lutheran Church or Evergreen Manor Activity Fund.
