Obituary

Norman E. Willibey, 74 of Montpelier died late Sunday evening at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.  Norman was a Williams County resident for his entire life.   He was born on December 7th 1937 in Northwest Township to Raymon H. and Susie I. (Darr) Willibey.  Norman graduated from Edon High School in 1956.  On May 29th 1958 he married Betty M. Smethurst in Edon, Ohio and she survives. Norman retired from the Ohio Gas Company as a service technician in 2011 after over 50 years of service. Norman was very active in the park programs in Montpelier, coaching Little League, Pony League and Girl's Softball.  He also umpired for men's and women's Softball programs.  He served on the Montpelier Park Board for 33 years and was instrumental in organizing and building the children's playground equipment at the Montpelier Park. Norman attended the West Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Montpelier for the past 54 years.  He also was a member of the Montpelier athletic boosters, supporting his children, grandchildren and others throughout the years.  Norman was an avid gardener and for the past 40 years could be found at the Williams County Fair making donuts under the grandstands.  He also had volunteered at the Montpelier See and Do for the past several years. Norman is survived by his wife Betty of 54 years, one daughter Lexie and husband John Zuver of Montpelier, one son Scott and wife Marcia Willibey of Montpelier, five grandchildren Courtney Covey, Cara Hornish, Aaron Willibey, Greg Willibey, Brooke Willibey, two great grandchildren Connor and Jaxson Hornish, and one brother Marvin and wife Elaine Willibey of Bryan. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation hours for Norman will be on Wednesday, July 11th from 2-8 pm at the Thompson Funeral Home in Montpelier.  Services will be on Thursday at 11 am at West Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Montpelier with Reverend Tawee Layraman to officiate.  Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier.  Donations may be made to the Montpelier Parks and Recreation or West Bethesda Presbyterian Church.
