Robert Glen Sanders, 85, of Locust Grove, Va., died Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at Fredericsburg, Va.
Born Jan. 28, 1926, at Youngstown, Ohio, to Margaret (Shood) and Stephen Sanders, he married Lucille Ashcraft and she preceded him in death in 2002.
A 1944 graduate of Springfield High School, Springfield, Ohio, he graduated from Youngstown State in 1950.
On April 1, 1944, Robert was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was placed in the 78th battalion and was in an intelligence reconnaissance group working mostly behind enemy lines. During his time, he was in the invasion of DDay, Battle of the Bulge, as well as crossing the Siegfried line into Germany, where, on Feb. 1945, he was hit by artillery and taken out of action. Robert spent almost one year in several hospitals from France, England, and finally the U.S. where he was honorably discharged from the Army, receiving five Purple Hearts, several Bronze Stars, and a Silver Star, along with several other meritorious citations.
Returning home, he received an engineering degree from Youngstown State University and worked as an engineer for the Ohio turnpike, Wabash and Norfolk & Southern railroad, assistant county engineer in Erie County, Ohio, and finally working for Ohio Edison out of Cleveland where he was a consulting engineer on the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant in Port Clinton, Ohio, and a power station in Shippingport, Pa. He retired in 1988 and moved to Virginia in 1989 where he resided until his death.
Robert was also a baseball and football official for 30 plus years, officiating high school, college, and some semi-pro sports. He was a great father and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He was a charter member of the World War II Museum in Washington D.C.
Surviving are three sons, Stephen (Diann) Sanders of Montpelier, Michael (Pam) Sanders of Millbury and Timothy (Lisa) Sanders of Montpelier; eight grandchildren,
Stephen and Trishia Sanders, Michael, Kevin and Krista Sanders, Tim, Joey and Tanner
Sanders; a great-granddaughter, Kiah Sanders; and former wife, Carolyn (Snyder) of
Montpelier.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Philip
Sanders in 1982.
Services will be public and held at a later date to be announced. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
Thompson Funeral Home in Montpelier is in charge of arrangements.
